Brian Fitzgerald – R.I.P.

Condolences to the family and friends of Brian Fitzgerald who passed away recently in the UK. Brian is remembered as a larger than life character and was a former player of the club, he was involved in the administration of the minor club in the 70s and was secretary of the senior club in the 80s where he was a major driver in fundraising activities for club developments. Brian actively promoted the club to the pupils of the CBS in his time as a teacher there. A funeral mass for the repose of Brian’s soul will take place at St. Joseph’s Church on Saturday 19th August at 2pm, followed by the internment of his ashes in Drumcliff. Éire Óg will gather following mass for a Guard of Honour.

Academy notes

Our U7's returned to activities this week with a football blitz with kids from Lissycasey on Monday evening. It was brilliantly ran by everyone who helped out. Thanks to all those who played a part making it an enjoyable experience for all. A similar event is organised for Monday evening also with kids from Wolfe Tones, Clondegad and Lissycasey taking part. U7 Hurling training resumes Friday evening, weather permitting.

The U13 footballers continued their preparations for next weeks Div. 1 semi-final when they hosted Monaleen on Monday evening in Eire Og. A highly competitive challenge game allowed further game time for the boys on the squad. Thanks to Monaleen GAA for visiting.

No luck for our U17 hurlers in Wednesday's "A" Championship fixture with Clooney-Quin. The lads were never really able to land a proper blow on the winners throughout the game which ended 2-22 to 2-12. Qualification for the semi-finals is still very much in their own hands with two rounds to be played however.

Best of luck to our U17 Academy hurling team who visit St.Joseph's Doora-Barefield on Monday evening needing a win to make the Academy "A" semi-final.

U17 football away to Parteen/Meelick on Friday evening in Div.2/3. A positive result is necessary to stay in contention for the Championship Semi-final. Best of luck to the lads.

U14 hurling and football schedules were made this week. U14A hurling begins 3rd September and we will have an Academy team contesting Academy "B". U14 Div. 1 football commences 24th September. Training has commenced for both.

Best of luck to our Intermediates who are out this Friday 18th in Éire Óg V Tulla @ 7pm

Ladies football notes

14 A Championship started last night with a loss to Fergus Rovers. A tough introduction to Div A Ladies Football but the girls played and fought to the end. More to come from these girls👍 Their next game is a way to Clooney Quin next Thursday, time tbc.

Éire Óg is hosting the U12 Munster Ladies Blitz on Saturday 19th of August with 30 teams from across Munster attending. Will be a very busy morning and car park will be very busy.

Our Intermediate team begin their championship in Éire Óg on Sunday morning against Liscannor. Throw in at 11am.

Our Junior team will head to Ballyvaughan to play Burren Gaels on Sunday at 2pm.

Our u8/10s coaches and girls are currently taking a well deserved break. The u8s will return on Wednesday the 23rd while the u10s will return on Saturday the 26th of August.

Well done to Emma Donnelly who officiated at the Gaelic 4 Mothers n Others games at the LGFA finals in Croke Park last weekend.

Scór Sinsir info from Clare GAA

A Chara,

Scór Sinsir an Chláir will take place on Friday, Oct. 6th next. We hope your club will be in a position to participate. Outlined below is a list of the competitions and the contacts/assistance available to help your club take part in what is, a celebration of our culture and heritage, showcasing our language, music, stories and dance.

Scór had fallen on lean times here in the Banner over the past number of years but 2023 has seen quite a revival with 17 clubs participating in Scór na nÓg (U.17), 15 in Scór na bPáistí (Primary Schools) and we aim to have similiar numbers at Scór Sinsir level. Please remember that a club may enter any number of the 8 comórtaisí on offer, and we would particularly welcome entries from Cumann Peil na mBan, Cumann Camógaíochta and Handball clubs also.

We are delighted to announce Clare fm as our new sponsors so expect to hear plenty about Scór over the next number of weeks.

The 8 competitions are:

  • Rince Fóirne (min. of 4 and max. of 8 dancers.....1 dance)
  • Amhranaiocht Aonair (1 song...)
  • Aithriseoireacht (Recitation/Story telling)
  • Ceol Uirlise (Irish music....min of 2, max of 5)
  • Nuachleas... (drama presentation, ...min. of 3, max of 8....approx 10 mins)

Coiste Naisiúnta Scór will host a webinar for Clare clubs on Tuesday evening next at 7 p.m.

https://events.teams.microsoft.com/event/ffcc074e-16cb-4905-9aff-2ec187674ed7@ac45bc86-afd4-42a5-9fc3-3e87e1b77fce

The aim of the webinar is simply to assist clubs with any queries they may have, and to offer assistance in any way possible.

We earnestly hope your club will be in a position to participate in at least 1 of the comórtaisí. Scór offers club members the opportunity to continue to represent the club and perhaps even claim county, provincial and All-Ireland honours. It is also a most enjoyable evenings entertainment.

Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me on (086) 8383102 or at irishculturalofficer.clare@gaa.ie. Scór secretary, Áine Ní hAodha will shortly be forwarding entry forms to clubs and is also available to help with any queries at pro.clare@gaa.ie
